Hang on tight. The world record is 7.08 seconds!
Since the Cube was invented, there has been a certain obsession by some to solve it as fast as possible. And over the last 20 years the records have fallen lower and lower - to times once thought impossible. Cubing has become a field of research, a sport, and a science. There's even a documentary in the works entitled Cubers featuring - what else - speedcubing.
I'm not the fastest by far. However I'm fascinated by the idea - building cubes, customizing them, learning all the solution algorithms. And when I began my investigation, I quickly realized there had to be speedcubing in Rubik's Movie. My year's worth of research recently culminated in a trip to the US Rubik's Championship in Atlanta in July 2008. I solved in the 3 by 3 qualifier and had times around one minute. It was great fun and I soaked up a few nice details for my story. I hope to do more speedcubing in the future.
Many of the Cube's biggest fans are under 18, though a few old-timers my age have gotten hooked. Maybe the speedcubing in Rubik's Movie will get even more people of all ages interested. The sport has an important part in the storyline as a catalyst for characters to develop friendships as well as rivalries, moving the plot forward and adding some real energy. Rubik is not only a great speed cube, but, since he is a cube, he's also an expert in the field. Carlos and Rubik have a goal which leads them into this competitive, velocity-driven world. And, before they know it, they are thrust into the national cubing scene where, suddenly, a lot more is at stake.
I see an opportunity here for the World Cube Association and its founders to gain exposure, as well as other organizations and companies involved in the cubing scene, including Winning Moves and the Speedstacks folks (makers of mats and timers used in competitive cubing), and of course Rubik's! I also hope that the best cubers in the country will be willing to help make the speedcubing in Rubik's Movie accurate and compelling on screen. Wanna know more? Check out some speedcubing videos! |
