Story

"Once there was a little cube named Rubik..."

Carlos and Rubik

Like most fairy tales, Rubik's is simple. Thirty years ago, the little magic cube was sent into hiding for his own safety by Erno Rubik, his only friend. In the fall of 2010, Rubik is discovered by Carlos Rodriguez, who receives the cube as a gift and frees Rubik by aligning his colors. Carlos is not sure what to make of his new friend, thinking of him more as an additional responsibility than anything else. Lisa, Carlos's faithful younger sister, instantly takes to Rubik and appoints herself his guardian, while Reynaldo, the oldest of the three Rodriguez children, has the typical initial standoffish teenage reaction.

Lisa and Rubik

Rubik, who has never been part of a family before, discovers the true meaning of childhood, imagination, friendship, and love from his three new friends. When the children discover Rubik's amazing powers they determine to keep him a secret, though Carlos is not against asking Rubik for some help with his chores. And Rubik, grateful to the boy who freed him, is intent on helping Carlos, an introverted thoughtful kid, to have fun and make friends in a his first year at a new school. But Rubik discovers that his little family - the three children and their father - have bigger problems than he can understand or fix.

When Carlos comes up with a plan to get his parents back together, Rubik is more than willing to help. The seemingly simple plan to reunite a family separated by distance and unfortunate circumstance, leads Carlos, Lisa, Reynaldo, and Rubik into a speedcubing adventure, a world of new firends, the mystery of Rubik's past, and the dangerous clutches of Rubik's old master, a cruel magician bent on reclaiming the cube's powers.

Along the way Carlos and Rubik find in each other the true friendship they are both looking for.
